In the modern era of Smartphones, Samsung has held the reputation of being innovative and constantly pushing the envelope. While Apple may get plenty of credit for the Smartphone generation Samsung has been a front-runner in the market for some time now. As Smart mobile devices become ubiquitous it becomes harder and harder to differentiate yourself as a brand and this is why innovation is key in this sector.
Samsung knows this all too well and with first mover advantage at its side, the manufacturer has decided to release 5G smartphones, a full entire year before its anticipated launch globally which was scheduled for 2020.
So what's all the fuss about? What will 5G Smartphones bring that the previous generation didn't have? Well, let's find out.
What is 5G?
5G networks are the next generation of mobile internet connectivity, proposing faster speeds and more dependable connections on smartphones and other devices than ever before.
5G networks is an upgrade of 4G networks, offering higher mobile internet speeds and more bandwidth. Merging cutting-edge network technology and the very latest research, 5G should offer connections that are droves faster than current connections, with average download speeds of around 1GBps expected to soon be the norm.
The networks will help power a huge rise in IoT technology, providing the infrastructure needed to carry huge amounts of data, allowing for a smarter and more connected world.
Samsung partners up with Verizon
Samsung is launching its first 5G smartphones in the first half of 2019, together with Verizon. The companies will be displaying a prototype of the smartphone the annual Qualcomm Snapdragon Technology Summit in Maui.
According to Verizon, the devices will run on a
“Qualcomm Snapdragon X50 5G NR modem and antenna modules with integrated RF transceiver RF front-end and antenna elements.”
With Brian Higgins, Vice President, Wireless Device and Product Marketing at Verizon advertising saying that,
“5G will usher in a new era of mobile connectivity, allowing people to connect to data, experiences and other people in ways never thought possible,” said “Together, Samsung and Verizon have made huge gains in bringing 5G commercial services to consumers in several cities. Now, we’re partnering to create a smartphone to put the power of 5G in the palm of your hand.”
Justin Denison, Senior Vice President, Mobile Product Strategy and Marketing at Samsung Electronics America noted that
“Samsung offers end-to-end solutions that are accelerating the wide-scale adoption of 5G and will help us realize our vision of truly connected living… We’re proud to work alongside innovative partners like Verizon and Qualcomm Technologies to deliver a smartphone that will fundamentally transform how people work and play.”
Samsung partners with AT&T
Shortly after Verizon was first with the original Samsung 5G news, both AT&T and Sprint announced that they would be getting the handset, calling it “another standards-based 5G device”.
This device will likely be arriving in the second half of the year.
The device will alos “be able to access both 5G mmWave and sub-6 GHz.”
The rest of their press release finds the carrier talking up its wireless plans, going forward, and remarking that this deal brings it up to three 5G devices, including a mobile hotspot announced in late October.
AT&T announced plans to grow its mobile 5G device line-up with 2 new 5G smartphones from Samsung in the first half and second half of 2019. These 5G smartphones will give customers on compatible plans access to the 5G network that it plans to introduce before the end of 2018, says AT&T.
David Christopher, President of AT&T Mobility and Entertainment states that,
“5G is going to be about more than just a network. Customers will eventually be able to connect in near real-time to unforeseen possibilities.”
What does 5G mean for consumers?
Once 5G service goes, those with Samsung 5G smartphones will be able to take advantage of the network through Verizon immediately. The carrier also revealed that users will be able to take advantage of additional services, games, and features.
“5G will usher in a new era of mobile connectivity, allowing people to connect to data, experiences, and other people in ways never thought possible,” said Brian Higgins, vice president, wireless device and product marketing at Verizon, in a press release.
“Together, Samsung and Verizon have made huge gains in bringing 5G commercial services to consumers in several cities. Now, we’re partnering to create a smartphone to put the power of 5G in the palm of your hand.”
Samsung shows no signs of slowing down
As the number one Smartphone manufacturer in the world, it comes as no surprise that Samsung is planning to release two 5G smartphones before most companies have rolled their first. It sees the first mover approach as a strategic advantage and is clearly confident in its ability to innovate faster than their competitors.
Having companies drive home this ethos will only be good for the market in helping bring high-quality technology to the consumer market faster than before.
